Self Portrait

I painted this self portrait from a photo taken several years ago while vacationing in Palm Springs. I was sitting on the patio in my own little world working on a painting when Bill snapped a picture. I used this as a reference to study values in the Stan Miller workshop. Normally, I would not have had such dark values on my face. I always think of watercolor as being delicate and transparent. It was difficult for me to paint this dark.

Dear Marilyn, I definitely agree with you when you said you had trouble working with the darkness on your self-portrait. You should do another one with only light shading so that your "essence" shines through.

This is FABULOUS! I love the shadows and I'm so glad you finally painted yourself. Who says watercolor always has to be transparent and bright? This is beautiful and you captured the moment exactly as it was. Any chance a daughter could get a copy of this?

This is a great likeness. Not sure I like the black eye though.

This is wonderful Marilyn! I guess I've drawn/painted enough spectacles to know that the black area is normal, and doesn't appear to be a black eye. When I first saw this, I was thinking that you were sitting at a piano! Gorgeous, I don't see it as too dark at all. Perfect!

So glad I'm getting your blog again. Haven't seen it for awhile. I loved looking at the old posts and enjoyed them all over again. Loved your self portrait and the one below. You could pretend it is modern art . Didn't Picasso paint uneven eyes? I just love your use of color.
I went to the Tamoshanters Painting class at the Carnegie Museum the same time you did. Look what you have done with your knowledge and talent.
